How can you check whether old flower seeds will sprout?
Test a small sample of known, untreated flower seed using a moist paper towel, labelled container and the species' germination conditions. Count the seeds that sprout and divide by the number tested. The percentage describes that sample, not a guaranteed result for the packet or garden. Check light and dormancy requirements first. Keep the test away from food preparation, children and pets; do not eat the seeds or sprouts, and exclude treated or unidentified seed.
Which packets are suitable for a home check?
Start with a labelled packet whose species, cultivar and treatment status you can establish. Record the supplier, packet year and any lot number. Separate packets remain separate tests, even if they contain the same flower.
This guide covers an informal check of ordinary untreated garden-flower seed that can germinate without a specialist pretreatment. It is not a method for identifying loose mystery seeds. If the packet is missing, the coating is unexplained or treatment status is uncertain, ask the supplier or extension service before handling it for a test.
The National Pesticide Information Center's treated-seed guidance explains that pesticide-treated seed requires pesticide-level care and must never be eaten or used as animal feed. Keep it out of this household test. Follow its label and local disposal guidance; do not burn or compost treated seed.
An old date is a reason to investigate, not a diagnosis. Storage history and species matter. A packet kept cool and dry is not equivalent to one left in a damp shed. If storage history is unknown, write “unknown” in the record rather than filling the gap with a guess.
What should you read before wetting the towel?
Find the packet's germination information, not just its flowering estimate:
- Expected germination period
- Required temperature or temperature range
- Whether light or darkness is needed
- Any dormancy-breaking requirement
- Instructions specific to the supplied seed form
Days to germination and days to bloom answer different questions. This test concerns the start of seedling growth, not the date of the first bouquet.
Some flower seeds need a cold, moist period before they will germinate. Illinois Extension's seed-testing guide specifically warns that an unmet stratification requirement can explain a test with no germination. Stratification is a controlled treatment for dormancy, not evidence that the seed is dead.
If the species requires chilling, scarification or another treatment, use a separate species-specific extension or supplier protocol. Do not improvise chemical treatment, heated equipment or seed-coat cutting from this guide. The simple towel check is not a universal shortcut through dormancy.
Does every flower seed need the same light and warmth?
No. For a concrete example, University of Minnesota Extension's zinnia guidance, reviewed in 2026, specifies darkness and gives a germination period of 4 to 8 days at 70 to 75°F. Those figures describe its zinnia propagation conditions, not every flower or every old packet.
That distinction affects the setup. A covered towel is not automatically suitable for seed whose instructions require light. If the method conflicts with the packet, obtain a suitable testing protocol rather than assuming the seed will adapt.
Choose a location meeting the verified conditions without makeshift heaters or a sunny windowsill that overheats the container. Record the actual location and, if measured, temperature. If you cannot provide the required conditions, the test cannot fairly answer your question.
How do you set up the paper-towel check?
The following follows Wisconsin Extension Dane County's seed-roll method. Use it only when the packet's light and other requirements fit a covered-towel test.
- Gather an undyed paper towel, a sealable plastic bag, water, a label and the identified untreated seed.
- Moisten the towel so it is very damp but not dripping.
- Place ten seeds along one edge and roll loosely, maintaining contact with the damp surface.
- Put the roll in the bag. Wisconsin specifies sealing about 70% of the opening, leaving some air circulation.
- Label it with the species, cultivar, start date and packet germination period.
- Keep it in the required environment. Check moisture every 2 to 3 days.
- At the end of the appropriate germination period, unroll carefully and record the result.
Keep different lots in separate labelled bags. Use a dedicated work surface away from food and drinks, and put the finished test where children and pets cannot reach it.
How should you choose the ten seeds?
Do not select only the largest or best-looking seeds if the question concerns the packet as it stands. University of Alaska Fairbanks Extension emphasizes representative sampling and warns that excluding damaged or discoloured seeds biases the result.
Ten seeds make the arithmetic convenient, not precise. One additional sprouted seed changes a ten-seed result by ten percentage points. A small or nonrandom sample can differ substantially from the remaining packet.
If a rare packet holds only twelve seeds, sacrificing ten to a test is a different decision from sampling ten out of hundreds. Our editorial preference is to ask the supplier about the lot and a suitable propagation approach before using most of a scarce packet. There is no requirement to test every packet this way.
What counts as a result?
For this informal check, record visible sprouting and note seedlings that look damaged or fail to develop normally. Do not silently count every split seed coat as a healthy plant.
A formal result is more demanding. The university propagation resource on standard germination defines it in terms of normal seedlings under optimal conditions. Official testing evaluates seedling development, not simply a photograph of emerging roots.
Keep those two records distinct: “seven seeds visibly sprouted in our home sample” is an observation. “This packet has certified 70% germination” would be an unsupported claim. A home towel check also does not test plant identity, freedom from disease, garden establishment or flowering performance.
How do you calculate the percentage?
Use:
Number sprouted ÷ number tested × 100 = observed sample percentage
Here is an original fictional record, not a test we conducted. Assume each sample reached its verified germination endpoint under appropriate conditions.

Do not add successive observations of the same seeds. If Packet A had four sprouts at an earlier check and seven at the final check, the total is seven, not eleven.
Record each packet separately. Combining A and B gives ten sprouts from twenty seeds, or 50%, but that pooled figure obscures the difference between the packets. It is less useful for deciding which labelled lot to keep.
What if nothing germinates?
First audit the test: correct species, appropriate light, temperature, moisture, duration and dormancy requirements. A zero result cannot distinguish all possible causes by itself.
A towel that dried out or became excessively wet is a problem with the test conditions. Alaska Extension identifies drying and excessive wetness as potential failures in its towel procedure. Record that limitation rather than reporting the result as a clean comparison.
If mould or uncertain growth prevents a reliable count, stop that test and consult extension about whether a fresh sample is appropriate. Do not add household disinfectants or fungicides to rescue it. Never taste seed or sprouts to judge their condition.

How should the result change your plan?
Use it as one piece of evidence. A high observed percentage does not guarantee field emergence. A poor result may justify replacing an ordinary packet, particularly when there is little time to repeat a failed sowing. Neither choice requires inventing a universal pass mark.
Keep a short decision record: packet identity, test date, sample size, verified conditions, final count, any abnormal growth and your next step. If the result was inconclusive, write that explicitly. It is more useful than a confident number from a failed setup.
Before growing any flower around animals, check its scientific name against a current veterinary source. The ASPCA plant database warns that even plant material listed as non-toxic may cause gastrointestinal upset in dogs and cats. Contact a veterinarian or animal poison service promptly after suspected harmful ingestion. The germination test says nothing about whether a plant is safe to eat.
